Bloody Cigarettes captures the heartache of love lost on new single “It’s Only Music”

Bloody Cigarettes, the solo project of Maximilien Gault, has always been a vessel for exploring the turbulent waters of love and loss. With his latest single, “It’s Only Music,” Gault delivers an emotional gut punch that will resonate deeply with anyone who’s ever navigated the complex landscape of a fractured relationship.

At first glance, “It’s Only Music” might seem like a standard indie rock ballad, but as the layers unfold, it reveals itself to be much more – a raw, poignant exploration of heartache, memories, and the bittersweet remnants of love. Gault's voice, tender and aching, serves as the perfect vehicle for this narrative. The opening lines, “Last night I woke up / Some dream got me shook up,” immediately set the tone, pulling the listener into a world where dreams and reality blur, where the pain of the past is as vivid as the present.

The verses capture moments of confusion and longing, while the chorus, with its refrain “It’s only music inside my head,” suggests a resignation to the fact that the love once shared is now just a memory, preserved only in the songs that chronicled it. The repeated line “It’s only music” becomes a mantra, a way of coping with the loss by reducing it to something as simple and familiar as a melody.

The lyrics are a highlight, showcasing Maximilien’s ability to capture the nuances of a relationship’s demise. Lines like “The smell of burnt-out cigarettes / The mark of a night I regret” evoke a vivid, almost tactile sense of nostalgia and regret. The bridge, where Max pleads, “Lie to me / Get me hooked on the love I need desperately,” is particularly striking, revealing the deep vulnerability at the heart of the song.

Musically, “It’s Only Music” is a masterclass in dynamics. The track begins with a soft, almost hesitant introduction, where Gault's voice is front and center, accompanied by delicate guitar notes. But as the song progresses, it swells with intensity – the guitars grow louder, the drums more insistent, and vocals become more strained, almost desperate, but in the best way possible. This sonic journey mirrors the emotional one, as the calmness of the verses gives way to the anguish of the chorus.

What makes “It’s Only Music” stand out further is its authenticity. There’s no pretense here, no attempt to sugarcoat the pain or make it palatable. Instead, Gault leans into the rawness, allowing the listener to feel every ounce of his heartbreak. And yet, there’s a beauty in that rawness, a sense of catharsis that comes from confronting the pain head-on.

For fans of indie rock, Bloody Cigarettes’ “It’s Only Music” is a must-listen. It’s a song that invites you to sit with your emotions, to reflect on your own past, and to find solace in the knowledge that, in the end, it’s only music – but sometimes, that’s enough.
