Iconic South Korean artist HyunA captures her honest and confident attitude on her latest album Attitude, as she rings in her 17th year in the music industry.

A trailblazing talent who has consistently pushed sonic boundaries, HyunA represents the do-it-all spirit of the modern pop star, framed by bold artistic vision and infectious energy.

With a multi-faceted career as a singer, dancer, and rapper that has previously been part of two chart-topping groups has gone on to build an illustrious career that extends through and beyond music.

In conversation with Earmilk, the powerhouse act dives into her sonic evolution, her personal favourite track of the album, how she keeps herself motivated in music and more.

What is the message/inspiration behind your latest album Attitude? And how does it capture your evolution as an artist?

My latest album is all about showing my artistic evolution in a transparent way. The main vibe? Transparency. I want my fans to see more of the real me, both through my vocals and the themes I explore.

The album spans various genres across the realms of pop, dance, and R&B.  What’s your creative process when it comes to moving from genre to genre?

Working with GroovyRoom was definitely a big inspiration. I trusted their vision for the album completely, which gave me the freedom to explore different genres with confidence.

Which track is your personal favourite track from the album and why?

My favorite track is Q&A because it’s the title track, where I got to push my artistic boundaries. The music video also doesn't have any choreography in it, which was a refreshing change.

In the future, is there a particular genre that you’ve wanted to experiment with in your career?

I'm not particularly fixated on any genre, and I'm all about the evolution of K-pop, which draws from a diverse range of influences. I'm excited to keep experimenting with my vocals. This album, with its fresh vocal style, really challenged me in the best way possible, which is why it holds a special place in my heart.

You’re celebrating 17 years in music. Looking back, how would you describe your musical journey so far? And where do you see it going from here?

I started my career so young and had some amazing opportunities with different people over the years. Music and the stage are my genuine passions—I've loved every moment of the past 17 years and time just flew by. My goal? To keep that excitement alive and kicking as I continue on this journey in music and on stage.

While tracing your journey, are there any specific moments that come to mind as your biggest highlights?

Looking back, my girl group days were definitely a highlight for me. Working as a team had a whole new dynamic compared to being a solo artist. Sure, it had its challenges, but it was so inspiring. Plus, it's where my journey began, so those memories will always be priceless.

How do you keep your craft fresh and yourself motivated in such a long career?

It's all about the grind and the drive to improve! I'm constantly in lessons and exploring ways to level up as an artist.

What three words describe HyunA, the artist and the person, the best?

Transparent, complex, and passionate

Finally, what’s one question no one has asked you in an interview you wish you were asked?

Picking just one question is tough, but I'm open to answering questions about who I am beyond the stage persona. I want to be understood beyond the character I showcase. I hope this album can do that — to share my aspirations and connect on a deeper level.
