Manchester's indie-pop quartet By Wednesday has released "Hitchcock Hero," drawing comparisons to early Bloc Party and The Smiths. The track combines catchy melodies with an alternative edge and blends atmospheric melodies with introspective lyrics. The song is brought together by layered, reverb-soaked guitar riffs and a dynamic bassline over a tight, swaying drum beat, creating a melancholic– yet reflective tone.
Singer and lead guitarist Conor Carthy shared insights into the song's creation: "Rob [our bassist] recorded the initial idea at home. We all added our parts, turning it into a progressive track. The song's moody bassline builds as other elements come together, driven by the drum beat, reminiscent of Interpol's layered sound." Lyrically, the song is not about anyone specific. Carthy writes verses on his phone and assembles them around the music, inspired by themes in Alfred Hitchcock films where protagonists are falsely accused and pursued.
By Wednesday has built a strong reputation in Manchester, performing at venues like Night & Day and Castle Hotel, and headlining a sold-out show at Gullivers. Supported by promoters like This Feeling, the band is ready to bring their music to a national audience.
