Norwegian artist Malin Pettersen shares new album Trouble Finding Words, unveiling a new side of herself and her artistry, framed by plenty of enthusiasm and commitment. Drawing from a range of musical influences, the album reflects Pettersen’s recent transition from Americana to Pop/R&B as she offers a seamless blend of nostalgia and refreshment.
With her powerful yet gently melodic vocals taking centre stage throughout the album, opening number “Entropy,” kicks off the collection with a mix of anthemic beats and minimal instrumentation that allow her soaring voice to shine bright.
The stripped back feels of the opener quickly picks up with bold percussions of atmospheric and luscious offering “Crying,” featuringaspiring soul star Stefanos Yowhanne, before the meditative vibe of the title track set up the versatility that stretches across the project.
Next, “The Sun,” infuses us with warmth and energy which continues on poignant “Cry if I Want To,” where 17-year-old Bergljot Bjella elevates the emotion. While
“Life,” with Mall Girls Beth MacBride andsoulful“Lost You,” with Sofie Tollefsbøl from Fieh both serve to slow things down, “What a Start to a Morning,” is an uplifting production that has grooving along.
The tail-end of the project loops back on atmospheric touches with “Easy On You,” and “Who I Am,” before final track “I Just Want Your Body (I Don’t Need Your Soul),” leaves us with quiet echoing notes that feels like we’re Pettersen and her rich yet delicate artistry. all over again.
A diverse collection built on an eternal urge to explore and a modernized soundscape, Trouble Finding Wordsfeels intimately familiar and vividly expansive all at once.
