Brooklyn act Emmannuel and The Unlimited Consciousness share sophomore single “DAYDREAM,” offering up a visceral metaphor of talent Emma Anne Johnson’s gender dysphoria. Built on tense yet otherworld sonic textures of distorted guitars and experimental electronic tones, the track lets loose into a mindset of frustration and struggle.
With vocals floating atop agitated yet celestial melodies, the track balances an angelic vibe with a touch of distinct eeriness, as we’re pulled into a whirlwind of strong emotions, assertions and affirmations.
Speaking of the track, Johnson say, “I am constantly struggling with the many masks the world expects me to put on. More specifically, gender roles are required of me in order to have a job, be a ‘daughter’ or just be a something someone understands. The journey of the song is symbolic to my relationship with my struggles of how being ‘a woman’ have led me to suicidal tendencies. “No I’m not your beautiful daydream” is my response to all the people in my life who don’t see anything besides the surface.”
From chaotic emotions to a calmer and lighter end note, the track weaves through struggles and frustrations to emerge at a place of hope and a possibility for self-love, as Johnson celebrates our imperfections with power and impact.
The brainchild of Johnson, Emmannuel and the Unlimited Consciousness offers up a musical odyssey that doesn’t confine itself to any genre, fearlessly pursuing experimentation and exploration within an alluring sonic world.
