Portland-raised, LA-based singer-songwriter Selina's "ANYWAY" tells the story of a spurned lover braving a tumultuous path toward an apathetic denouement. It's a very substantive and interesting choice as a single but really paints a picture of Selina as an artist of substance, unafraid to make bold decisions and tell uncomfortable truths.
The echoing "anyway" reflects Selina's dissatisfaction with her lover, beginning with the tense and heartbreaking "woke up next to a stranger" that breaks the opening silence of the track. Additionally, the metronomic woodblock-type snares build the song's smoky, vengeful atmosphere. All collapsing with the bridge "you let me down, and I won't be around, be around, be around." It's a story of heartbreak that is equally heartbreaking to the listener, a compelling and engaging offering that doesn't feel like many soul singles dropping right now.
Coming off of her stellar 2022 EP 16, Selina imbues her music with such a dynamic force that you can really feel her energy radiating from each track. With all the drama and movement of a Shakespearean tragedy, "ANYWAY" is a stormy neo-soul vibe that more than does justice to this new generation of sirenic alternative R&B rising stars.
