Today, LP Giobbi shares two new singles: “If Love Is A Skill” with indie pop duo SOFI TUKKER and a preview to the multi-instrumentalist, producer, and DJ's highly anticipated debut album Light Places, out May 12th on Ninja Tune imprint Counter Records.
The accompanying special studio performance video for “If Love Is A Skill (feat. SOFI TUKKER)" was recorded at Virtue & Vice Recording Studios in NYC featuring LP Giobbi on grand piano, Sophie Hawley-Weld (SOFI TUKKER) on vocals and Michael Cheever (Le Chev) on the drum machine. Compared to the typically colorful and vibrant stage performances delivered by Sophie and LP, this stripped-back B&W video highlights the intimate and vulnerable undertones expertly hidden beneath the layers of bouncy grooves that folks are probably more familiar with. This is an inside look at the earnest songwriting and high-caliber musicianship responsible for LP's music. While many folks find themselves losing their minds on the dance floors during LP's intoxicating DJ sets, the tracks they're being hit with are anything but mindless bangers being thrown out as excuses to shoot off air cannons. Instead, you're getting a world-class producer and multi-instrumentalist dancing effortlessly across the ivories and delivering a fusion of bass-rattling house beats and bright feel-good samples that embolden the timid and invigorates the soul.
Always one to stay humble and never forget those who have helped her along the way, LP’s childhood piano teacher Carolyn Horn, is credited for providing the necessary building blocks that she believes helped her embark on a career in music, something she’s forever grateful for. “Every time I play the piano on stage or let out a scream, you are coming through me” LP comments. “The amount of love and belief by a mentor and musician that you instilled in me at such a young age is life-changing. You were the ultimate wild woman role model”.
We first introduced LP Giobbi to EARMILK audiences during a 2018 interview for the original launch of SOFI TUKKER's multifaceted label/publishing house/artist collective Animal Talk. At the time, the multi-talented pianist, DJ, and producer had just changed from being a fan in the crowd at a SOFI TUKKER show to opening for them on the road and helping run their new artist initiative. Fast forward to today and LP Giobbi has earned over 102M streams across platforms, including Spotify RADAR’s Artist to Watch, Amazon’s Artists to Watch and TIDAL's Artist to Watch 2023. Her “one-woman jam band” DJ sets blending her CDJs with live piano have graced top festival stages like Coachella, EDC, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Tomorrowland, Electric Forest, and Creamfields. She's also supported iconic artists like Fatboy Slim, Diplo, Mochakk, DJ Tennis, Dead & Co, and John Summitt. Even legendary English DJ Pete Tong invited her out as support for his massive O2 Arena show in London. She's recently been nominated for Breakthrough Producer in DJ Mag’s Best of North America Awards and landed on the cover of Spotify's Best of Electronic Music 2022.
Animal Talk was originally founded with the noble intentions of championing gender equality and radical creativity within music. And while LP Giobbi played an invaluable role in helping execute SOFI TUKKER's dream early on, she's continued on that mission through her own work while founding the non-profit educational platform called FEMME HOUSE—an initiative that seeks to create equitable opportunities for women and other marginalized gender expressions. Through her activism work, LP is committed to ensuring dance floors, and the music industry as a whole is a safe and open space for everyone.
It's hard to not buy into what LP Giobbi's selling. Just look up at the decks and prepare to be mesmerized by the tie-dye Grateful Dead shirt-wearing modern electronic Mozart that's dancing fearlessly shining a giant smile from ear-to-ear as she covers the crowd in a blanket of euphoric piano house.
