London-based electronic producer Niven gives us a glimpse of upcoming EP Van, with the textured beats on “Snow,” led by rich rhythms layered over deep but minimal instrumentals that make for a hazy but power-packed kaleidoscopic sonic experience.
With an expansive electronic flair that he’s made his signature over the years, the inventive number is a warm and vibrant offering made up of distorted vocals that break up a smooth and hypnotic soundscape to transport us and immerse us in the world he builds for us.
The EP is a reflection of Niven’s surroundings amid the Covid pandemic, coming to life in the instances of a solo travel that saw him traverse Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria, with each piece on the EP set to be an outward-looking yet introspective production, painting a vivid picture of not just the life zooming past him but of his own headspace as well.
Written in Voldoley, a small village just outside the historic city Veliko Tarnova in Bulgaria, “Snow,” is celebration of stillness, encapsulating a quiet moment after constant unrest and movement throughout five months of travel.
Managing to infuse tranquillity into the delicately crafted skittering beats, the track comes just a month after Niven broke his five-year hiatus with “Rositsa Walks.” Showcasing his ability to be grandiose within the minimal DIY aesthetic, Niven leaves us brimming with anticipation for what’s to come.
