LOKRE pays homage to the magic of motherhood on “Something From Nothing” [Video Premiere]

R&B and neo-soul gem LOKRE (FKA LIZ LOKRE) opens up a photo album of precious memories on “Something From Nothing”. An offering of gratitude dedicated to every immigrant mother who made the impossible possible, “Something From Nothing” is a beautiful reminder to honour our roots in the special, small but mighty ways.

Set into motion with a textured stanza that pays homage to those here and above who’ve contributed to our growth, “Something From Nothing” is an experience of reconnecting with our ancestors in pursuit of growth and generational healing.

As the song begins, you feel the sun beating down and hear hand-clapped rhythms while birds chirp in the distance. A voice gently beckons you to come closer. A deeply visceral listening experience, LOKRE lulls us into serenity with her serene melodies. Produced by Adrian X and Jordan Ullman of Majid Jordan, “Something From Nothing” is a musical oasis tinged with tropical elements and warm hues influenced by LOKRE's Indo-Trinidadian heritage.

The visuals for “Something From Nothing” equally captures that same energy. Directed by Christine Do, the music video is a sacred celebration of motherhood featuring real families of all backgrounds and walks of life. Do makes brilliant use of stairs to symbolize that each step of the way––no matter what walk of life we are on––we’re all connected. Decorated by a palette of earthy greens and a textured grain that gives it a reverie-like feel, the cinematic visuals curate a wondrous awe that testifies to the magic of mothers.

“Something From Nothing” captures how mothers make miracles happen in the simplest of moments, whether it’s whipping up a delicious home-cooked meal in the blink of an eye or mastering the perfect bantu knots. With LOKRE’s own mother and grandmother serving as the impetus of inspiration for the song, “Something From Nothing” is a deeply sentimental record that marks the second single from LOKRE’s upcoming debut album, Elizabeth, devoted to the women who came before her.
