Canadian-born, California-based Late July has just shared her recent cinematic indie-pop single "Sober." This song marks the fifth release of the year for this prolific writer, following her cover of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped-Box."
"Sober" is an emotional plea to a loved one to get healthy and stop the abuse of alcohol. Late July emotionally tells her lover how much she cares about them, but needs them to kick their habit for good. With lyrics including, "so won't you please get sober/ I am going to want you when it's over/ You know I loved you from the inside, outside/ Now I am waiting on the sidelines wide eyed", she is forthright with her feelings of her deep care for them, as well as anticipation for a better future together. Musically, "Sober" thrills with striking 80's-inspired synths and layered heartfelt vocals. Rich keys and thumping bass-lines underlay her soaring, cathartic melodies. "Sober" is a song for healing and hope, but it is also a reminder of how dangerous addiction can be.
Late July is singer-songwriter and cinephile Nicole Simone. Her love of 80's films and emotionally charged singers including Lana Del Rey and Phoebe Bridgers penetrate her own musical stylings of raw songwriting packaged in orchestral indie-pop. Born and raised in the colder climate of Canada and now residing in Los Angeles, her experience living in the two drastically different climates and places have further influenced her music with a unique duality in sonics, at times dark and moody, and at times uplifting and colorful.
