Blvck Svm has conneced with Dutch producer Sebastian Kamae for a fresh new EP called fiftypercentgratuity.  Originally from Floria, Svm moved to to the midwest to attend the University of Chicago, studying while simultaneously working at his craft as an artist. Building an impressive catalogue during the pandemic over a series of dynamic, engaging releases, his new project with Kamae ties it all together sonically and lyrically, providing five focused tracks featuring vivid production and thought-provoking subject matter.

"langostino" introduces the atmospheric, wistful sound that dominates this EP, with vibrant keys and soaring guitars opening the track. As Kamae's punchy, light drums are brought in, Svm's soft yet commanding delivery pairs smoothly with the airy instrumentation, as he shows much restraint and focus in his delivery. The grooves are enhanced with "togarashi," which introduces rich bass that drives the beat forward as watery, expansive keys and graceful strings float above. Over the elegant instrumentation, he weaves together rhymes effortlessly, packing his bars with introspective lyricism. "otoro" brings in a different sound with a slower pace, and a luxurious yet ruminative feel. With twisting, dark vocal samples and mercurial keys, this song feels like it belongs as a soundtrack to the earliest hours of morning. Closing out with the smooth, vaguely psychedelic "risotto", the rapper and producer at their most relaxed as laid-back keys and crunchy drums underscore Svm's tranquil delivery and vivid lyrics.

An intriguing, focused offering from Blvck Svm and Sebastian Kamae overall, fiftypercentgratuity pairs elements of traditional boom-bap with progressively atmospheric sounds. With immersive, chilled out production from Kamae that suits Svm's patient, easygoing vocal style to the tee, this EP makes for a refreshing listen.
