Emerging NYC artist Devin Roy serves his new project titled underneath (The Grey Sky), a body of work that explores his life as an artist and the things that make him tick. The 15-track body of work is ripe with insightful and introspective themes laced over moody and solemn backdrops.
The project starts with the introductory track "WHOAMi," which aims to give listeners a look into Roy's life where he attempts to find his true purpose. This is followed by the gloomy aesthetics of "alowHi," where he talks about escapism, depression, and the mechanics of finding happiness through it all. On "Lu Lu's Lemon pt ii" the mood is upbeat and bright with a bouncy, Spanish guitar-driven backdrop where Roy delivers braggadocio bars with gusto. He keeps the hyped energy on the aptly titled "FUEGO," an upbeat trap bouncy track with a catchy chorus to match. In "Lois Lane," he talks about his wavering faith and how losing his religion changed him in many ways. The production is a sobering and dreamy soundscape peppered with a soft drum groove and layered melodic runs that tie the reflective rap verses together. While Devin handles most of the vocal duties, he does bring some guest vocalists like Money Motiv who appears on "ADDitude" and Kay G who adds his sublime melodic runs on the introspective "On The Low." The project wraps up with him soul-searching for answers in the moody track "Lost Blessings" and the jazz-infused "Hattori Hanzo Steel." The latter is an exploration into the theme of finding one's center and true purpose as life progresses. Overall, underneath (The Grey Sky), is a heartfelt ode to Roy's artistry and the journey he had to embark on to find himself.
