Legendary deejay/producer/host Kid Capri is back in the fold with THE LOVE which is his first release since 1998's Soundtrack to the streets. The 19-track body of work is his first album release in 25 years and aims to commemorate his birthday (7th of February) and also remind listeners that he still knows how to rock the microphone with ease. Longtime fans would also appreciate this release as Kid Capri recently recovered from Covid and he is back doing what he knows best.
The project opens up with the anthemic "The Truth Will Never Lie" which dives into his longevity in the rap game. Here, Kid Capri is in his bag while reminding us that a steady work ethic is much needed to succeed. This is followed by the culture-inspired "Sucka Free" and as the name suggests, it calls out all forms of fakeness or culture vulture activities in the industry. Over a punchy boom-bap backdrop, Kid Capri gives his 2 cents, sieves out the perpetrators, and still finds a way to stay fly. On the slapping (I couldn't help it) "Slap Key," Kid Capri gets a bit introspective and runs through some of the ups and downs he experienced in order to be great. It's interesting how Kid Capri holds it down on the vocal department and the first feature doesn't show up till track 6, "Her Type" with singer Lovel's smooth melodic chorus. Dancehall OG Lexxus comes through with his distinct booming vocals on the bouncy "Pon Me" while he brings in his daughter Vina Love on the mid-tempo party jam titled "Uptown" which is a celebration of the famous neighborhood in NY.
Overall, THE LOVE is a celebration of the hip-hop culture, Kid Capri's tenure as a pioneer and legend in the industry since the golden era.
