Emerging Irish artists Malaki and Tolü Makay made good use of the lockdown in Dublin to team up for a new collaborative single titled "The Light." The R&B/hip-hop-infused track is the duo's homage to success and their respective journeys as artists rising through the ranks despite the odds and obstacles. Singer Tolu Makay opens up the guitar-laden record with her angelic melodic performance ripe with insightful gems that look at far how she has come. Rapper Malaki follows up with an emotionally-laden verse where he gives listeners a glimpse into his personal struggles and how he overcame his inner demons to find self-acceptance. The production for "The Light" is layered and exudes a summer-type aesthetic with its warm textures, lush guitar riffs, and mellow drum grooves that ebb and flow as the song progresses.
Rap artist Malaki is known for his thought-provoking style that dwells on delicate issues from mental health, social and political commentary as seen on his new EP DFTTYM. On 31st October he’ll be supporting Arlo Parks for the Dublin leg of her sold-out tour Collapsed in Sunbeams, before heading to London for a headline show at The Camden Assembly on 7th December.
Singer Tolü Makay released her debut EP Being last year and has performed at RTÉ’s ‘The Heart of Saturday Night’ and Other Voices Galway International Arts Festival.
