Texas-based Nigerian artist S.O. just released his new EP Larry Ginni Crescent, which serves as the follow-up to his last album Augustine’s Legacy, which was dedicated to his late father and his first child. The EP sees the rapper going back to his African roots, specifically back in Nigeria where he was born and raised. Titled after the street in Lagos, Nigeria that S.O. lived on as a child, the rapper takes the listener's on a heartfelt journey that covers topics such as love, positivity, self-identity, and being true to oneself at all times. The 7 track body of work also features the production skills of Grammy Award-nominated producer GP, alongside burgeoning Nigerian producer TBabz and SteveRawd.
The project opens with the uplifting vibes of "Prosper" which sets the tone for the rest of the project. The track is as glorious as the title with its body moving drum grooves, lush textures, and of course S.O's catchy melodic runs to boot. He continues the uplifting theme on "Corner (O Ti De)" where he reflects on his journey from nothing to something while acknowledging the blessings from God above. On the previously released single "Kinda Love" he delivers a summer house party jam that is also a tribute to his wife, whom he pours adulation on all over the record. On the guitar-driven "That One" he reminds us that things may not be rosy but you just have to find a way to enjoy the good times regardless. On that one (see what I did there?) he flips the script with a dose of Nigerian pidgin English to good effect capturing the good times he had back home. He closes the project with the amapiano-infused track "Wonder" where he brings the listener close to where the party is at. The feel-good track is about living one's truth but once you throw in some small chops and jollof rice, things could only get better from there. Larry Ginni Crescent mixes contemporary Afropop laced with inspirational elements and a whole lot of R&B and soul. S.O knows how to balance his skill set as he keeps it lively and engaging with his vocal range and musical stylings.
The Lagos-raised artist is truly an international artist who has lived in London but is now based in Texas. He currently has four LPs and two EPs under his belt and it seems he is already back in the studio giving birth to more music.
