As Pugs Atomz prepares for his LP release, he shares the animated video for his single "Test Drive" which sees him displaying his sensitive side. He makes use of the soulful guitar-laden production provided by musician/producer Tusk57 to share a heartfelt story of a first date that slowly develops into a lifelong affair. He carries listeners along with his vivid lyrics that showcase the dreaded first date anxiety and eventual calm that comes after realizing that the connection was strong after all. Atomz also recruits the help of vocalist Awdazcate whose melodic runs enhance the heartfelt verses and adds a rich warm vibe to the song.
The animated video follows Atomz as he proceeds to meet his date and from there both of their lives change forever. The animation style has a psychedelic retro summer aesthetic and makes use of abstract motifs from coordinated colors, dreamy sequences, and more. I must admit, it's the simplicity that really makes it stand out for me. "Test Drive" is the title track from Chicago’s Pugs Atomz forthcoming album. The project is produced in its entirety by LA-based multi-instrumentalist producer Tusk57 and includes features from rappers like Killah Priest, Rockie Fresh, and Chris Crack.
Born in Pittsburgh and raised in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, Pugs Atomz got his start as a member of the renowned Chicago Hip Hop collective the Nacrobats that was the foundation for MC’s Open Mike Eagle, Psalm One, Thaione Davis, and painters Hebru Brantley, and Statik RK to name a few. He also co-hosted the CTA Radio show on Chicago’s legendary WHPK station for 20 years, championing Chicago's underground and burgeoning stars. He also became one of the designers behind the Fashion-forward Iridium Clothing Co. and started his own brand USUWE 93. Returning home he saw how much his neighborhood had changed, and Co-founded the Englewood Arts Collective to help change the narrative. using public art, activations, and grants to benefit the community.
