Denver-based Sam Pine has unveiled his latest single "Why Can't U?" and it is pure sonic bliss. Melding genre-exploring sounds including dashes of psych pop, bedroom synth and even elements of jazz, Sam Pine evokes a refreshing modern sound with hits of nostalgia.
In "Why Can't U?" the artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist explores how isolation and lolinessnes from the pandemic has had a negative impact on his relationships. According to the press release, relocating from Los Angeles back to his hometown of Denver, Sam Pine found his relationships strained due to the overwhelming extended-distance. The listener can hear in "Why Can't U?" a plea for love, attention and certainty. When the world feels out of control, Sam Pine reminds us of our own need for relationship reassurance and how disheartening and difficult it can be when we don't receive that. He confides, "I had relationships that felt very tested at some points exposed. It's the classic long distance narrative but with my own spin." Featuring groovy animated bass, satisfying and imaginative synth lines, and deliciously woozy vocals, "Why Can't U?" is an innovative take on indie pop while exploring vulnerable themes.
Sam Pine grew up in Denver, Colorado being obsessed with an array of music genres from funk, jazz, R&B, pop and rock. The teen made his way to the esteemed CalArts studying music full time and throwing himself into the art of production. "Why Can't U?" is off of his album Evergreen which was written in Pine's childhood bedroom. The coming of age album explores an existential awakening he had during quarantine and discusses everything from heavy introspective thoughts, anxiety and ultimate acceptance.
"Why Can't U?" is a satisfying and novel listen, perfect for the last bit of summer.
