Boldy James has been busy in 2020, releasing three albums already. He has just announced another album with producer Real Bad Man, titled Real Bad Boldy, which will be released on December 11. The Detroit rapper has shared the first single from the upcoming project “Thousand Pills”, featuring Stove God Cook$.
The dark, atmospheric “Thousand Pills” is an eery, subdued jazz rap song. "Thousand Pills" has a menacing tone throughout, bolstered by the subdued production and vocal style. The production from Real Bad Man is rich, but minimalistic and nocturnal. The instrumental features creeping keyboards, rich bass, and dark trumpet flourishes. Real Bad Man creates a shadowy, hazy backdrop that compliments James’ vocal style. James’ languid cadence and flow suits the production well, as he floats smoothly over this beat. James and Stove God Cook$ weave specific, vivid narratives about street life and lavishness. Their rhymes are both effortless and dense, and remain evocative throughout. The detailed lyrical approach taken by both rappers adds a dimension to the song that is enriching and engrossing.
Real Bad Boldy will be James’ fourth album of 2020, but he does not sound creatively exhausted. Instead, he sounds sharp, focused, and ready to give a full effort on this forthcoming album. Considering how consistently prolific he is, Boldy James is definitely an artist to watch as we approach 2021.
