Hip-hop veteran Wale is finally back from his hiatus. This week the D.C. native blessed us with his newest single “Daylight,” a track with a well-constructed soundscape by producer Thelonious Martin. When paired with Wale’s fire bars, it creates an effortless hit.
Wale’s “Daylight” is definitely not for the shallow minded. From the rapper’s mention of Lisa Leslie, a WNBA player standing at 6’5, to repping his Nigerian culture by shouting out the Super Eagles soccer team, Wale’s use of metaphors through his lyricism shows that he is not, and never was, a force to be played with.
[Chorus]
Yo', summer is approaching
I am the Super Eagle that humble these vultures
I’m hungry, I'm focused
I'm troubled, I’m introverted
I'm nothing you know of
I'm sure your women gon' eat 'cause she come to my vocals
[Verse]
If life's a bitch pray my bitches inches is Lisa Leslie
What you impressed with I find depressing
No really, I'm 'bout to finish this Valium prescription
These niggas using anxiety for an aesthetic
While I struggle in some environments after I settle
Switchin', mhm
The typically private Wale also opens up on the song, giving fans a better understanding of his personal struggles with anxiety, depression, and the pressures that come with being in the hip-hop industry. Altogether with smooth melodies infused with a soft bass, Wale’s wordplay on “Daylight” reminds us of how talented of an artist he is while still revealing how hungry he is to keep going.
Wale has announced that his next album is complete, so fans can look forward to the upcoming project dropping soon.
