Cape Weather – the LA/Oakland duo formed by Natalie Smith and Eric Jackowitz – has released their debut single "Telephono" via Future Gods Records. Both members were involved in various other projects before joining together in this incarnation: Jackowitz drummed for Nick Waterhouse and Smith has been releasing work under her solo acts. For this Dusty Springfield inspired song, Jackowitz drew in a plethora of talented musicians from LA to New York to Europe (Ben Alleman, keyboardist for Ryan Adams, Erik Groysman, composer for the tv show Drunk History, and Joe Berry, keyboardist and saxophonist for M83) to record their parts in addition to having Steve Bone mix and Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief) master.
With this track the band has drawn successfully from their retro influence; they preserve that old-time feel while still creating their own original atmosphere. "Telephono" sounds like it's being played through a vintage telephone receiver – it has that perfect layer of warm fuzz on top of everything that just makes you feel good. Meanwhile, Smith's vocals are like a velvet shawl that wraps around you to help fend off that first autumn breeze while you say goodbye to summer. Accompanied by a silky bass line, crunchy sax, and casual beat, this catchy hook will inspire you to cruise into fall in style.
