"Soul" is another reason why Caleborate is about to blow up

On his latest single, Berkley raised and Scaramento born Caleborate shows off his potential with a whole lot of “Soul.”

[soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/339102713" params="color=000000&auto_play=true&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true" width="100%" height="450" iframe="true" /]

Does that beat sound familiar? It should; a relatively successful rapper/producer used the same sample a while back. And while it may be too soon to make any real comparisons between Kanye and Caleborate, there is something to be said about this NorCal MC.

“Soul” is the first single off of Caleborate’s upcoming album, Real Person, due out this fall. It’s upbeat and jazzy, much like last year’s 1993 which introduced him and his intriguing rhyme scheme too much of the music world. Produced by Lege Kale, “Soul” is Caleborate at his most Caleborate-y. He’s nimble on the instrumental, bouncing here and there, alternating between slamming his foot on the gas and cruising in neutral over rapid drum samples. “Soul” also shows off his excellence handling a hook. On the chorus, he softens his voice and sings along with a handful of female background singers to help give the song some real, well, soul.

Caleborate is the type of rapper we music journalists hope to find. He’s completely himself without being too far out there. He seems to be a student of the J Cole, Murs and Kendrick school of Hip Hop but keeps his flow and delivery authentic.

“Soul” is an enticing appetizer which accomplishes two important things in anticipation for his album. First, it satisfies us for the time being, delivering a consumable track that is a joy to blast out of your speakers. Second, it piques our interest, causing us to hunger for more. Luckily, Fall is around the corner, so we won’t be starving for long.

Press play on “Soul” above and be sure to keep your eyes and ears locked on EARMILK for all things dope music.
