Los Angeles based rapper Maxo is in my opinion, in a class of his own. His music is highly self-reflective (and at times very somber), but at the same time maintains an uniquely West Coast airiness to it that is reminiscent of early Blu & Fashawn records, which is quite impressive for someone who has only been rapping for a year and a half.
Today EARMILK has been given the opportunity to debut the latest single from the 22 year old, a lo-fi confessional entitled "18 Years" produced by Coopatroop & AspectOne. This track is a perfect display of Maxo's candid, stream of conscious style of songwriting where he brings listeners straight into his conflicted head-space, laying down lines like:
"God on my chain I guess I'm running from my fears now/ Seems like these days can't put no trust up in my peers now"
"And now I'm locked in trying to do it big/ because last year I wasn't even trying to live".
When asked what was his inspiration for this song, he simply stated "I need a bigger chain". Listen to the single above, and make sure not to sleep on his Smile EP that dropped a few months ago (peep it below).
