It's International Women's Day today, and so to celebrate all the team at EARMILK are writing exclusively about incredible female artists all day. Throwing Shade otherwise known as Nabihah Iqbal is a London based producer and NTS Radio host. Iqbal studied History and Ethnomusicology as an undergraduate at SOAS and currently presents an amazing, xenophilic, show on NTS Radio focussing on unearthing new world music for listeners, as well as playing out field recordings she's taken in different countries. After graduating from SOAS Iqbal subsequently gained an MPhil from Cambridge specialising in African history and human rights law and has since worked in South Africa with human rights lawyers concentrating on women's rights. Her latest EP as an eclectic musician & producer House of Silk was released by Ninja Tune last year after a previous release with No Pain in Pop (Patten, Grimes, & Forest Swords) and her debut on Kassem Mosse's Ominira imprint. In November 2014, Throwing Shade was commissioned by the Tate to compose a piece of music for the Turner Prize. This year she has currently teamed up with fine-art photographer Wolfgang Tillmans at the Tate Modern. She featured as part of the museum's "Playback Room Sessions" with a talk about the development of music production from the 1960s, and is due to play a show at the Tate Modern Saturday 11th March 8pm alongside Tillmans' South Tank installations.
