Jlin just dropped “Nyakinyua Rise,” the B-Side to her forthcoming two-track EP, Dark Lotus, which is due out February 10th via Planet Mu. The Gary, Indiana-based footwork producer and DJ has dedicated the track to the children attending the Dagoretti Nyakinyua Primary School in Kenya, and the Nyakinyua Community Empowerment Program.
It’s a cut full of frenetic movement, organic djembe drums, and uplifting tribal calls to action. Action, in this case, is probably just dancing, but considering Jlin’s associations with feminist DJ collectives like Discwoman, it’s probably not too far a stretch to imagine the whoops and howls throughout the track a straight-up battle cry.
According to the label, Dark Lotus marks a transition between ‘Dark Energy,’ her 2016 debut album, and Black Origami, her next full-length which is scheduled for release later this spring. “Nyakinyua Rise” is pretty far left of footwork, so here’s looking forward to whatever Jlin has up her sleeve next.
