Over the past few years, we’ve come to know and love the raw emotion and energy that permeate all of L.A.-based Matt Lange’s productions. After getting signed to deadmau5’s imprint mau5trap last year, Lange released his debut album, Ephemera, to much acclaim. Never one to look back, this past week Lange debuted the massive seven-track Patchwork EP, a release that certainly lives up to its name.

Lange sets the tone for the first half of the EP immediately with “Tempi Disarming,” a masterful work of synth-based techno. Lange expertly weaves in and out of a sweeping melody, destined to keep you enthralled. With “Basimilus 3,” the synths drive the track whereas on “Hertz, Don't It” the lower end rules. This track would fit right in with any techno aficionado’s repertoire, with its galloping bass and driving beat.

Matt Lange starts to shift gears a bit on “Elementally, My Dear Watson,” with a lighter techno and recurring synth swells. By “Q.V.C.A.M.X” the EP has taken on an entirely different feel, as synths fall like raindrops over a subdued techno underbelly, readying the listener for the last two tracks of the EP.

Matt Lange really lets the emotion burst through on “Empty Walls.” You can feel his pain in every part of the track, from the steadfast lower end to the strings enlisted for the track. It all combines to be the perfect backdrop to overlay the depressed vocals. For the final track, “Consider This,” determination instead of sadness pushes through with the help of a rock-based percussion and forceful synths, ending the EP on an almost hopeful tone.

All these tracks combine into one EP that cannot be missed. Pick up your copy of Patchwork today!
