Beatport announces its top selling tracks from 2015

The top selling records of 2015 on Beatport.com are indicative of quite a few things happening in the music industry and how we make and listen to our own music. 

The importance of genre is one of those things. Many people look at genre today as a label or limit on creativity, or a box to break out of while creating new things. What we've seen, though, is that people want something to call their music by, and though new music styles seem to be popping up faster than ever before, trending and being out of style in just a fast a manner, there will always be a name for said music. Whether it be something "tropical," or something tagged "future," it's what we like, what we like talking about. Though Beatport may not classify its releases in those trendy terms, we see those genre trends coming in and out of top sellers: the evolution from disco to 90's and garage inspired house, the calming of electro house. The question is, what does genre mean to you?

In this list, we see the expected players (Tiesto, Dmitri Vegas & Like Mike, Mark Knight, Nicole Moudaber, Green Velvet, Armin Van Buuren, Markus Schulz), but we also see the importance of newcomers (Nora En Pure, Prok & Fitch, Croatia Squad). There are revivals of old names in new places (Jean-Michel Jarre, Gouryella, Estelle, Axwell /\ Ingrosso, Mason), Grammy Nominees (Above & Beyond), and some charts that feel like they're missing something. While Beatport remains at the top of its game and relevant for music fans and producers, many listeners can get their fill through streaming services. Beatport, though, is still the destination for electronic music purchasing, and these stats are indicative of the music we want to hear forever, not just stream in the moment.
