Maribou State's music is easy to listen to but hard to place. At times, the band's sound resembles Flying Lotus' bass-infused acid jazz, at others the music reflects pop sensibilities of Disclosure and/or the instrumental genius of Caribou. Maribou State's latest effort, an edit of their trippy new single "Rituals", most resembles the latter, and could easily pass as a B-side on Caribou's excellent 2014 album Our Love. The track is a five-minute slow build of haunting falsetto vocal samples, steady drums and stirring synths that all crescendo in a grand finale of psychedelic sound.
If one message resonates most, its that you shouldn't sleep on Maribou State. "Rituals" and the twosome's new edit are just a small part of Maribou State's deep, eclectic catalogue, which you can check out now on SoundCloud and Spotify. Their new album Portraits drops June 1 on Counter Records.
The London-based duo heads out on a must-see North American tour later this spring, hitting D.C., LA, Denver and more.
