Tom Misch and Carmody can't keep away from one another. Every couple of months, the duo releases a genre-defying song that attracts huge internet attention before going their separate ways. They always get come back though, and luckily for us, this time they've released a full EP, titled Out to Sea. The first single from the release, "So Close," is an expertly crafted blend of acoustic, electronic and hip-hop that touches on a wide range of emotions, from melancholy to optimism.
Drum machines clap and bounce while an ear-catching guitar riff opens the door for Misch and Carmody's vocals. The two vocalists echo each other throughout, creating a dialogue between a close and loving couple on the brink of ending things. Neither side wants to breakup as both beg, "Stay here and we'll align" as they reflect on their past. On certain lines, Carmody's voice elevates and shines before she gives Misch a shot to do the same. Leading into the chorus, the two harmonize beautifully as they sing, "Stayed in that place and spent all of our day, the flashes of color that lit right through the grave." The songwriting is what we have come to expect from Misch, who takes some of his cues from fellow UK artists James Blake and the xx. It showcases emotions in an intelligent yet comprehendible and relatable way for listeners.
We can't wait to see what the rest of the EP has in store for us but, for now, we'll enjoy this tender, low key gem.
