Badbadnotgood drapes us with "Velvet"

One of the more interesting bands to rise up from the ground in the past few years is a trio from Toronto called Badbadnotgood (BBNG). They got their claim to fame by being an experimental jazz group while having an affinity for hip-hop. BBNG won over fans by covering hip-hop artists such as Kanye West, Gucci Mane, and Waka Flocka Flame. They even caught the attention of Tyler, the Creator who eventually collaborated with them.

Ever since, all three self-titled albums have been met with mostly positive reviews. BBNG's original work has lathered curious fans with their own interpretation of modern jazz without all that pretentious top hat and monocle undertone. This young group has been slowly gaining steam. Each release has an abundant amount of textures, layers, and experimental jazz that keeps everyone intrigued. Take their newest tune, "Velvet", for example.

This particular song of theirs is quite ambient in the first half. You can definitely hear a certain pattern to their composition, but their experimental jazz style keeps it slightly chaotic. Chaotic in this sense is the non-linear and unpredictable approach that progresses this track. In the latter half of "Velvet", the tempo is suddenly quickened into a frenzy of seemingly inharmonious cacophony of each element. But somehow, it is beautiful. Welcome to the world of BBNG.

The name is Phil. I've been with EARMILK for handful of years now. I love all sorts of music, and I tend to change up what type of music I'm into throughout the year. However, one thing is certain: I love anything chill and mellowed out. A lot of the time, you'll see me covering smooth, chilled out grooves through our infamous Daily 2% series. 80 BPM is love, 80 BPM is life.
