Flatbush ZOMBiES continues with their weekly Day of the Dead series with the track “Red Light, Green Light”. Produced by Erick the Architect, who also contributes his own verse and hook, the track’s instrumental contains entrancing vocals by Espa over a drifting flute melody, which combined makes for a dreamy, atmospheric soundscape. The soundscape provides the perfect backdrop for both Erick and Meechy Darko to unleash sharp, poignant bars. The track features grim subject matter as the ZOMBiES rap about the desolation and terror that encompasses the environment they find themselves a part of. Meechy details the war ready mindset one must have in order to survive in the ghetto in his hook as he raps, “ Before I leave the crib you better say your prayers/N*ggas trigger happy every single day I swear/ More murder I’m more aware, more bullets I’m more prepared”. The hook speaks to the reality that one must be aware “every single day” in the hood and be prepared for the possibility of finding themselves in a dangerous scenario.

The ZOMBiES rap about life, death, and religion, subject matter that has dominated the ZOMBiES catalog extensively since the beginning. This is not surprising considering that the groups name, Flatbush ZOMBiES, is connotative of the aforementioned subject matter. The highlight of the track is Erick and Meechy’s chemistry, with each member respectively feeding off of and re-appropriating the concepts the other has rapped on as heard on their hooks. With their unbelievable group synchronization and the growing following around their brand identity, the Flatbush ZOMBiES are on track for their most successful year yet.
