We developed a huge crush on London-based trio Bear’s Den earlier this year when they released their EP Agape. But the newest track off their forthcoming EP Without/Within is proof that they’re no summer fling. We’ve fallen head over heels for “Sahara” – a subtle and beautiful ballad that starts slowly like a sunrise and builds to a sprawling desert drive.
Subtle electro-oscillation, vocals and chapel chimes open the song, with keys and harmonies joining in to support the standout chorus, “All my life I was never honest enough / and I thought I would never get over you.” Just after four minutes, it builds to the anticipated apex in a Mumford & Sons style – but with an added synth-light feel to the fundamental folk framework.
The song is a boundless, expansive version of what we’re used to. It’s like Bear's Den has grown into the bigger venues/festivals they’re playing and are headed toward full on indie gentry. Fittingly, the band is now on the Gentlemen Of The Road Stopover Tour, with a UK headline tour this fall that’s already selling out.
And speaking of sold, we’re about ready to enter into an LTR with the boys of Bear's Den. Because to paraquote the closing lyrics of “Sahara” – we’ve found love. Lucky for us, we can make it offish on October 28 when Without/Within is released in the UK/Europe via Communion Records.
