Toro Y Moi – So Many Details (Maths Time Joy Rework)

Underground producers seem to be taking a more analogue-style approach to music making these days. On the one hand, we have the veterans and long-standing producers. On the other, recent music-major graduates and the "I got this synth as a Christmas present in 1998 and it took off from there" 20-something-year-olds. Either way, you have amazing music coming from just about everywhere on the planet–from Flying Lotus in the US to XXXY in Manchester. Most recently, a very talented musician from England by the name of Maths Time Joy.

His most recent production, a testament to James Blake and Four Tet, is a remix of Toro Y Moi's "So Many Details". The original is quite the soothing station wagon-cruising piece of art that is best reserved for a lazy Sunday to catch some surf, or a late night smoke sesh. The remix takes the original from smooth 70s shag carpet sex to "I think this guy may have 50 synths going at once, this is awesome ".

The vibrato of the intro synth, and the spaced-out vocals create an airy soundscape that reminds of chilling on an open ocean with waves slowly rolling past as the sun's beams shatter the water's surface, dancing about in unison with the beat. The crescendo hits like a thousand Game Boy "Start" buttons being pressed at once in a strangely harmonic pattern. The encompassing combination of funk and acoustic with Moogs and LFOs makes Maths Time Joy stand out from the rest, paving a bright future for the 22-year-old artist.
