When in the need for fresh beats to add a new dimension to an otherwise mapped out day, Wisconsin’s Artifakts pays the cover to the speakeasy where the creative juices are flowing. While Artifakts may seem somewhat new to the scene, he builds off of established groundwork that has been set in stone by artists ranging from Pretty Lights to J Dilla. Even though his beats may not contain the bells and whistles that many expect from their music in the here and now, there is a lot to be said about possessing the ability to craft balanced soul-injected simplistic beats that stand apart in their own right.
For his newest release Garrett Meyer (Artifakts) navigates the hip hop edge of his abilities, layering a sputtering piano melody over a simplistic beat. In order to spice things up from a side dish to a full entrée Meyer’s additions of sampled horns, vocals and an exploring electronic forefront combine to add depth, resulting in a well-rounded track.
