School of Seven Bells – "How to Love" (Lil Wayne Cover)

After allowing yourself a double-take, you can rest assured that the title of this post is correct. Somewhere between releasing Ghostory at the beginning of the year, an extensive international tour, and prepping for their upcoming US tour, the NYC duo had decided to offer their take on Lil Wayne's sensual seduction ballad "How to Love". The original showcased Wayne's singing "talents" (supported by generous amounts of Auto-Tune) in an ode to a troubled flame that is struggling not to fizzle out.

Despite the songs original success of reaching #5 on Billboard's Hot 100, I greatly prefer the School of Seven Bells rendition. The acoustic guitar strums are swapped out for a gauzy sweeping soundscape, accentuated by light drum claps and hits; a perfect setting to support the emotional gravity of Alejandra Deheza's airy croons. Plus, it is always fun to hear Alejandra sing "I admire your poppin' bottles and dippin'/Just as much as you admire bartendin' and strippin".
