Straight From The Teet – Flight Facilities, Beach Coma, Alper Atrek, Empt, & Habibi

There's no exact way of knowing how many songs are released in a day. Whether it be an eighteen second kazoo ditty on Soundcloud, or a Hypem track with 4 hearts, all music deserves a shot. Even on an independent blog like Earmilk, it's impossible to cover every band/song/remix worth listening too. That's why Straight From the Teet is back, and this time…IT'S DAILY! My name is Logan (aka Running) and I will be curating Earmilk's newest old feature, highlighting two up-and-coming artists from two different genres, so sit back and enjoy some good-old-fashioned, non-pasteurized, Earmilk. Drink it fast though, because I'll be coming back tomorrow with more..

(P.S. Check out Saturday Mornings, a blog I made with some close friends of mine)

The long summer days are quickly coming to an end. Trees are already starting to change color in the Boundary Waters, and the humidity isn't nearly as jungle-like as it once was. I'm really getting in to the thick of my "lasts" here in Minneapolis. Last dinner at my favorite Thai restaurant, last walk across the stone arch bridge, last late night drive down to west bank with some choice friends, but the one that saddens me the most is my fast-approaching last bike ride around lake Calhoun. Some prime activities: cycling past the beach-goers, listening to pot-heads blaring Allman Brothers from their vans, and-most importantly-avoiding crashes with the mega-hot roller blading cavalry have been a part of my life since we moved here 5 years ago. I've compiled some great beach music for this last excursion, got some ambient, chillwave, yacht, lo-fi, pop, all the good stuff, then I'm off to Oberlin and on with my life.

Flight Facilities

A lot of bands have to tour behind some kind of album, but not Flight Facilities. I bet they could just play "Crave You" and "Foreign Language" back to back for three hours to a perfectly content beach-crowd audience. Check the Euro dates below and start buying your plane tickets. As for me, these are just warm-up tracks, for zipping through the deserted side streets of gentrified suburbs, off to the big lake for a goodbye.

Beach Coma

It's a pastel world out there, and I'm just biking through it. The repetitive motion of wheel over wheel, lean after lean, bump after bump, lulls me mindless. These de-tuned synths are dripping in reverb, and that's just the way I like them. If you're looking for something a little less well known than the aforementioned FF-but still as upbeat and shimmering-then Perth's own Beach Coma is a safe bet. Did that rickshaw just pass me? I must be here.

Alper Atrek

I should probably take a break, there's a ice cream wagon called "Pick A Paleta" that sells popsicles on the busy path between the beaches and playgrounds. I don't spring for it because another troupe of fluffy-haired rollerbladers in shorts is quick gaining on me. The sun is just about to reach it's most intense, and the only thing that can keep me cooler than an ice pop is Alper Atrek. I've been playing "Keys and Clouds" on repeat for awhile, trying to put my finger on why I like this haunting track wedged between two feel-good, lo-fi, jams. I'll figure it out eventually…

Zipping under the tree canopy with my polaroid-colored glasses on is fun and all, but sometimes I need to take in music without all these distractions. Found a straight-away. Tighten my grip and close my eyes. I can feel the patches of leaf shadow scattering across my body. A split second of warm, two seconds of cool on my wrist. Synesthesia, that's all I can say. Romania's Empt is the most textural artist I've ever heard. I can just imagine him in Constanța, chilling on some beach on the Black sea, composing this music in his head. Thank God for Warminal picking this up, or I might never have heard it. Woah…almost ran off the trail.

It's just about dusk on the third coast. I need something that's juussstt discordant enough to combat the reflection of orange street-lamps in puddles, keep this goodbye from being to idyllic. Habibi should do the trick. I honestly know nothing about him, other than that he's been producing surreal, ambient, summer music intermittently for the past couple years. I push up my steep driveway, wipe off a bit of sweat, and throw my bike to the lawn. Not with a bang, but with a whimper…
