Childish Gambino – "Freaks & Geeks"

I'm sure most people haven't put Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) on their "MC's to watch for 2011" lists but after hearing this new track; they really should. He just released his new track "Freaks & Geeks" from his upcoming EP. He may have his "little" comedy TV series on the side but at his core he is a writer. That's evident in his wordplay and it's backed up by his confident delivery. It seems like he's actually spent some time honing the craft. Or maybe he's just half assing it and fucking around with this rhyming thing. Either way its good and it seems to come so effortlessly. Check out the track below.

I didn't expect this dude to have such decent tracks. I knew him first on Community and that's a funny show. Hope he blows up this year.

  • I have been jealous of this dude ever since I started watching Community and found out his FIRST real job was writing for 30 Rock. College, then writing for 30 Rock. Then Community and now this. Dammit. He's awesome.

  • I don't like it that much. For a dude as funny as he is, he should really come harder with the word play. He kills it in stand up and on community, and you have to be funny to write for 30 rock straight out of school. Maybe he will mature I don't know how long he has been rapping for but a lot of his rhymes are trite and his style reminds me of drake biting Lil Wayne.

    • I was a little surprised by his content. He has great flow and I actually do enjoy this quite a bit, but I figured he'd take a less "typical" route with his lyrics. (fuck bitches, I'm awesome, swag, etc) I can still dig it though.

    • If you've listened to any other songs from him, you'd know he doesn't intend to make joke raps, though some of his lyrics might sound funny just because its in his nature. Shits weak anyways, if you want that crap go listen to lonely island…

  • "my dick is big, girls like me, i'm the man" and more of the same, tired ass, lame hip pop. To each their own, but can I get something with meat on the bone?

    thehipi February 16, 2011 12:10 PM Reply
    • Right, because Donald Glover is definitely concerned with restoring credibility to conscious hip hop.

  • Donald Glover is honestly destined for super stardom. It didn't happen with Spiderman, but something else just as lucrative will come along that proves to be exactly the vehicle he needs to become a household name. He does shit like this in his spare time, and Community owes at least half its success to his comedic timing, which literally improves every week. I can't imagine anybody not liking at least something he does.

  • oh please, will you people call anyone who pics up a mic and makes a music video the "hottest MC" ? Let's get real, the guy is mediocre at rapping, great at coming up with one-liners for comedy shows. Rap is already full-to-bursting with the lil-wayne/drakes running around their cute suburban towns singing about… what again? Singing? Cute little dick jokes?

    get out.
